Event Description
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) Build with Strength initiative is partnering with Habitat for Humanity International and the Insulating Concrete Forms Manufacturers Association (ICFMA) to construct decent, affordable and sustainable housing across the U.S. This initiative will help to provide incredibly strong insulated concrete form homes that are energy efficient for dozens of Habitat Partner Families over the course of several years.
This build in New Orleans will consist of two double units designed by Auburn University’s Rural Studio for AmeriCorps volunteers that will support NOLA Habitat’s ongoing operations. Holcim the concrete provider will be supplying a low carbon mix design for this project, demonstrating how ICF and Concrete can provide energy efficient and resilient construction, while also driving down Global Warming Potential.
The build will take roughly a week to construct, and throughout the construction process, anyone is welcome to come volunteer and get hands on experience with ICF construction. BuildBlock will have a trainer onsite leading this process, educating volunteers, and teaching ICF construction methods as the structure is built. We recommend that contractors, architects, and engineers all consider visiting this project and volunteering if able.
On November 15th, BuildBlock will host an AIA session for the A/E community and provide 1 AIA CEC credit for attendees. While this class is specifically targeted at architects and engineers, anyone is welcome to come learn more about ICF construction. Please come prepared to volunteer if you wish to gain hands on experience after the class.
