BuildBlock ICC-500 Tornado Impact Testing

Although we couldn’t persuade Intertek engineers to test our wall system with a real missile, we came close with our successful ICC-500 Tornado Impact Testing.

This “Missile Impact Test” involved firing 15 lb. 2x4s from a high-pressure air cannon at over 100 mph! The goal was to assess how well the wall assembly withstands severe tornadoes and strong winds, ensuring occupant safety.

We passed the test with excellent results, showing no damage or deformation on the non-impacted (interior) side of the wall and minimal damage on the impacted side. This demonstrates that BuildBlock Wall Systems provide outstanding protection, even in EF5 wind events.

For this testing, we adopted a “worst-case scenario” approach, using minimal steel reinforcement and concrete compressive strength in our 6” core wall system. The impact force was over 13,000 pounds per square foot, which our 6” wall system effectively withstood, requiring only minor repairs like patching stucco or replacing siding boards.

“Part of BuildBlock’s mission is to provide an innovative method for building energy-efficient, sustainable, and disaster resilient structures. Passing this test demonstrates the strength of BuildBlock ICFs and emphasizes BuildBlock’s commitment to delivering safe and resilient structures that can offer safety for its occupants, regardless of the threat.”

BuildBlock has a long history of constructing resilient structures and safe rooms. Our insulated concrete forms (ICFs) have even been tested by the U.S. military for blast resistance, outperforming dedicated modular blast protection systems. This latest test adds to our proven track record, providing peace of mind for those designing, building, and living in safe, sustainable ICF structures.
